Q What format can I use to get
better-than-CD-quality audio
on to disc, that most people can play
back?

A Ross Burridge, Editor, replies:
Assuming you can produce such
audio in the first place, there are a
number of formats that go beyond
the Red Book CD standard (16-bit,
44.1KHz), such as SACD and DVD
Audio, although you’ll need specialist
production software. You could also
use a lossless data format such as
FLAC, which can store anything up
to eight channels of 32-bit, 1,048KHz
audio on a CD / DVD. In both cases,
you’ll still need an output system
(amp, AV receiver or computer
soundcard) capable of handling the
format you’ve chosen without simply
re-sampling or down-converting it
back to CD quality.
