D ubai, where new and jawdropping
structures rise daily,
like shiny, futuristic weeds.
Now, architects OMA have
designed this 1.5 billion sq. ft, high-tech,
eco-friendly, 24-hour city complex.
Home to around 90,000 people, the
Waterfront City comprises a main
island surrounded by four precincts. An
82-storey tower (The Spiral) has office,
retail, residential, and hotel areas. And
that sphere that looks like the Death

Star is actually a 44-storey mini-city,
complete with escalator tubes to whiz
you around like George Jetson.
To encourage walking, buildings are
densely packed, which also creates
natural shade and elimates the need
for planet-bashing air con. Currently,
it’s only a masterplan, at least 10-years
away, but with ideas like these around,
it won’t be long before we’re all living in
24-hour mini-cities with our own robot
servants. Probably.
